We are well aware that many of our members will have travelled to Tenerife on several occasions, mainly possibly to take advantage of its excellent climate and other facilities available. The island is most definitely divided between the north and the south and, as indicated on our web site, we have four courses in the south, namely Amarilla, Golf del Sur, Golf Costa Adeje and Las Americas. At the present time, you will see that Las Americas does not subscribe to Club Tajinaste Golf but we are hoping this situation will change in the near future. Its rates are particularly competitive and we would certainly recommend that a visit is paid to it.
Whilst on the topic of the south of Tenerife, it
would be remiss of us not to mention the beautiful
island of La Gomera, where is situated the relatively
new course of Tecina Golf. The aspect
of this golf course is particularly spectacular and
is very well worth while making the effort to take
the ferry from Los Cristianos to either San Sebastian
or Santiago and enjoy the delights of playing this
course from a substantial height right down to the
Tecina Hotel itself.
Generally speaking, the south of the island does experience longer hours of sunshine than the north but also can, at times, be fairly windy, but this will most certainly not detract from the great pleasure of playing these golf courses. They are all of a high standard, most of them having upgraded in the last year or so in order to compete with competition in other resorts around Europe and in America.
Apart from playing golf in the south, there are many delightful villages and other sites to see, such as theme parks and marine excursions to look at the sea life which abounds throughout the Canarian islands. There is an enormous selection of restaurants as well as first-class hotel and self-catering accommodation. The south is mainly geared to the sunshine tourist and, of course, this is essential to the continuity of the island’s economy.
The journey now to the north of the island which, in the main, is provided by an excellent motorway, takes one through several major towns, linking up to the major city of Santa Cruz, and then turning left over the island through Laguna and down to Puerto de la Cruz. As one journeys further towards Santa Cruz and across the island, the terrain changes notably from a much drier aspect to a rich and verdant countryside, with hills covered in pine trees and a plethora of palms, including the famous Canarian palms. Just outside Laguna is our first northern golf course of Club Real, being an old-established course dating back to approximately 1930.
We then proceed shortly to the major north town of Puerto de la Cruz, which really does provide a quite outstanding selection of opportunities for culture, customs, bars and restaurants and accommodation alike. The famous Loro Park, of worldwide renown, is situated on the edge of this town and really is a must when visiting this particular part of Tenerife.
Another visit which really is essential, either by bus, car or taxi, is to the top of Mount Teide, being approximately 12,000 feet high, with a cable car taking you the last few thousand feet.
It would be hard to describe the changes in terrain as you proceed upwards, but the landscape at the top is most unusual and, we understand, has been used in one or two scenes for the Star Wars series.
The coastal aspect around Tenerife is wonderful, with small villages, individual restaurants offering a great variety of foodstuffs and, further west, the older villages of Los Silos and Garachico, to name but a few, which are quite charming. There are also certain mountain restaurants, again offering a great variety of local produce.
To conclude, generally speaking, there is no language barrier on the island as most people, perhaps with the exception of the supermarkets, do speak good English, although they do like you to try to speak Spanish as well.
Tenerife has attracted tourists from these islands of ours for many years and it is, at the present time, trying to make improvements that should place it as one of the world’s great holiday resorts. We are aware that other golf courses are planned, particularly in the north of the island, and this would add huge benefits to their tourist economy.
